Spatial Autocorrelation, Dispersal and the Maintenance of Source-Sink Populations

چکیده
Populations may be regulated by both local density dependent factors and spatial variation in habitat quality I explore the in uence of spatial autocor relation in habitat quality on the survival of model populations Dispersal is modeled as Markov tran sitions between patches A nite rate of population increase was assigned to each patch Total habitat area and mean dispersal distance had strong e ects on overall population persistence The e ect of spa tial autocorrelation was relatively weak but inter acted with dispersal distance The results suggest that landscape pattern can play an important role in population survival but its importance depends crucially on dispersal behavior

Evidence of large-scale source-sink dynamics and long-distance dispersal among Wood Thrush populations.
Source-sink dynamics are commonly thought to occur among Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) and other songbird populations, allowing for the persistence of populations with negative growth rates ("sinks") through immigration from populations with positive growth rates ("sources"). Knowledge of source-sink dynamics is important for management and conservation because the removal of source habita...
متن کاملEvolution of natal dispersal in spatially heterogenous environments.
Understanding the evolution of dispersal is an important issue in evolutionary ecology. For continuous time models in which individuals disperse throughout their lifetime, it has been shown that a balanced dispersal strategy, which results in an ideal free distribution, is evolutionary stable in spatially varying but temporally constant environments. Many species, however, primarily disperse pr...
متن کاملTemporal autocorrelation can enhance the persistence and abundance of metapopulations comprised of coupled sinks.
In spatially heterogeneous landscapes, some habitats may be persistent sources, providing immigrants to sustain populations in unfavorable sink habitats (where extinction is inevitable without immigration). Recent theoretical and empirical studies of source-sink systems demonstrate that temporally variable local growth rates in sinks can substantially increase average abundance of a persisting ...
متن کاملNew approaches of source-sink metapopulations decoupling the roles of demography and dispersal
Source-sink systems are metapopulations of habitat patches with different, and possibly temporally varying, habitat qualities, which are commonly used in ecology to study the fate of spatially extended natural populations. We propose new techniques that allow to disentangle the respective contributions of demography and dispersal to the dynamics and fate of a single species in a source-sink met...
متن کاملRestricted dispersal determines fine-scale spatial genetic structure of Mongolian gerbils
Restricted gene flow may cause positive spatial genetic autocorrelation of animal populations at fine spatial scales. The Mongolian gerbil Meriones unguiculatus is a territorial, social rodent. Territoriality may create social fences to restrict dispersal or gene flow of Mongolian gerbils to a short distance. Restricted dispersal may differentiate fine-scale spatial genetic structure of populat...
